The rising cost of business hardware is changing how companies buy laptops and PCs.

Understandably, many organisations are looking much harder at price, comparing online deals and trying to keep replacement costs under control.

The problem is that when the focus moves heavily towards processor, memory, storage and headline price, one important detail is increasingly being missed:

the version of Windows installed on the machine.

A laptop can look like excellent value, have a perfectly suitable processor and plenty of memory, but still arrive running Windows 11 Home rather than Windows 11 Pro.

That can create problems once the device needs to be introduced into a properly managed business environment.

Home and Pro are not the same

Windows Home is primarily aimed at personal users.

Windows Pro includes additional business features designed to help organisations manage, secure and support their computers.

These include features such as:

  • BitLocker Drive Encryption
  • Remote Desktop hosting
  • domain joining
  • Microsoft Entra ID joining
  • additional business management capabilities

Microsoft explains the differences and the upgrade path from Home to Pro in its Windows Home to Pro guidance.

For a home computer, some of these features may never matter.

For a company managing multiple users and devices, they often do.

The cheapest deal can create extra cost

This is the point businesses can easily miss.

A company may save £50, £100 or more by choosing a particular laptop online.

But if that machine arrives with Windows Home, the saving can quickly be reduced by:

  • a Windows Pro upgrade licence
  • IT engineering time
  • additional configuration
  • delays getting the device ready for the employee
  • extra complexity within the wider IT estate

So the cheapest purchase price is not always the lowest overall cost.

This is particularly relevant now, when higher hardware prices are encouraging businesses to shop around more aggressively.

It can make management harder

Modern IT support increasingly relies on consistent device management.

Businesses want computers configured to the same standards, protected appropriately and managed throughout their working life.

This forms part of the TCNS IT Support & Workplace approach, covering areas such as device configuration, patching, endpoint security and user management.

A Windows Home machine introduced into an otherwise standardised environment can create an unnecessary exception.

The IT provider may be able to work around it, but that does not mean it is the best way to manage the estate.

Security should be consistent

Good cyber security is not simply about installing security software.

It is also about maintaining consistent controls across the organisation.

Business-grade operating systems make this easier by providing the features needed to manage and protect devices centrally.

Windows Home is not inherently unsafe.

It is simply not designed around the same business management requirements.

Can Home be upgraded?

Yes.

Windows 11 Home can be upgraded to Windows 11 Pro, so buying the wrong edition is not normally disastrous.

But there is still a cost.

The licence needs upgrading, the machine may need additional configuration and IT time is required to put everything right.

That can turn what looked like a saving into unnecessary additional expense.

Check before buying

Before ordering a business laptop or PC, check:

  • Windows 11 Pro, not simply Windows 11
  • processor model and generation
  • memory and storage
  • manufacturer warranty
  • whether it is a business or consumer model
  • compatibility with your existing IT environment

TCNS is perfectly comfortable supporting equipment that customers source themselves.

The important thing is to check the complete specification before placing the order.

With equipment costs rising, it is understandable that price is receiving more attention.

Just make sure the version of Windows does not get lost in the small print.

A quick conversation with your IT provider before purchasing can save considerably more time and money later.
